Yellow is red and green together with the blue switched off, which makes a blank yellow screen useful for one job in particular: it shows you instantly whether the blue part of your pixels is working.

It is drawn at the size of your screen, so a phone, a laptop and a TV all get the same yellow colour screen with nothing to scale and nothing to compress.

How to Fix a Yellow Screen

Far more people arrive here with a screen yellow tint they want gone than with a yellow screen they meant to open. The good news is that a yellow computer screen is almost always a setting, and settings are free to change.

Start with night light, because it causes more yellow screens than everything else put together. Windows 10 and Windows 11 call it Night light, macOS calls it Night Shift, and phones call it a blue light filter. All of them cut blue light to make evenings easier, and cutting blue leaves yellow behind.

On Windows it lives in Settings under Display. It can also switch itself on by schedule, which is why a monitor yellow tint so often appears at the same time every evening.

Next, check any app doing the same job. Programs like f.lux warm the screen automatically and keep running after you forget you installed them.

Then the colour profile. A wrong or damaged profile pushes a whole screen warm, and it is a common result of a driver update. On Windows open Colour Management and set the display back to the default sRGB profile. On a Mac the same list is under Displays and Colour.

Now the monitor itself. In the monitor menu, look for colour temperature and try 6500K or the Standard preset. Warm, Low Blue Light and Reading modes all push the picture yellow on purpose, and an Eco or power saving mode often does the same while dimming the backlight.

Then the cable, which people forget. A loose or damaged cable can weaken the blue channel and leave everything yellow, and an old VGA cable with a bent pin is famous for it. Push both ends home, look for bent pins, and swap the cable if you can.

Finally the graphics driver. Both Nvidia and AMD control panels have their own colour settings that sit on top of Windows, and a bad update can leave them wrong. Reset those to default, and if the yellow only started after a driver update, roll it back.

A quick way to tell a setting from a fault: open this yellow page and the white page on the screen next to yours, or on your phone. If your white looks yellow and the phone does not, something on that machine is warming the picture. If both look the same, your eyes have adjusted to a screen that was always slightly warm.

Yellowish Tint on a Laptop Screen

A laptop screen that is yellowish has the same causes as any other, plus two that only laptops have.

The first is battery saving. Many laptops dim and warm the screen when they run on battery, or when battery saver switches on at twenty per cent. Plug the charger in and watch: if the yellow lifts within a second or two, that is all it was.

The second is the panel itself. Laptop screens sit under a plastic layer, and heat from years of use turns that layer slightly yellow, usually from the middle outwards or along the hinge where it gets warmest. This is real ageing and no setting will fix it.

Every brand shows it: Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer and MSI laptops all turn up in the same searches, and the pattern is the same on all of them. Check the settings first, then plug in an external monitor. If the external screen looks right, the laptop panel is the problem, and if both look yellow, it is the software on the machine.

One more setting worth checking on a laptop is the maker's own display app. Dell, Lenovo and others ship colour tools with modes named Comfort or Low Blue Light, and those are on by default on some models.

Yellow Screen on a Phone

A yellow screen on a Samsung, an iPhone or any other phone is nearly always a setting, and there are three worth checking.

The blue light filter comes first. Samsung calls it Eye Comfort Shield, Apple calls it Night Shift, and Android calls it Night Light. All of them warm the screen on a schedule, and all of them can be turned off in the display settings.

Then the screen mode. Samsung phones have Vivid and Natural, and Natural is noticeably warmer. On an iPhone, True Tone matches the screen to the light in your room, so a phone under warm lamps at night deliberately goes yellow. Turn True Tone off and the picture goes cool again straight away.

Third is power saving, which dims and warms the display on many phones.

If none of those is on, look at where the yellow sits. A phone with a yellow band or a yellow patch, rather than an all-over cast, usually has a screen that was replaced or damaged. On AMOLED panels a yellowish look at very low brightness is normal for the technology rather than a fault.

An iPhone screen yellowing evenly over several years, or an old phone that has gone warm all over, is the display ageing. That is not repairable with a setting.

LCD Yellowing Over Time

Screens do go yellow with age, and it is worth knowing the difference between that and a setting you can change.

An LCD lights its picture with a backlight, and backlights drift warm as they age. A monitor that spends ten hours a day switched on for five years will not show the same white it showed when it was new. The change is slow enough that you never notice it, right up until you put a new screen beside it.

The plastic parts age too. The layers in front of the panel yellow slightly with heat and light, which is why an old laptop often looks warmest in the middle of the screen.

Neither of these is repairable, but neither is dangerous either. If the screen still does its job, a slightly warm white is something you get used to in a day. If it bothers you, most monitors let you lower the red and green channels in the menu, which pulls the white back towards neutral at the cost of a little brightness.

The honest test is a second screen. Put the same white page on both, side by side, and you will know within a second whether yours has drifted.

Warm Yellow Screen: Fault or Setting?

Not every warm screen is broken. A warm yellow screen in the evening is what most people should be looking at, and the whole point of night light is to give you one.

Screens ship cool because cool looks brighter and sharper in a shop. Sit in front of that all evening and it keeps you awake, which is why every operating system now includes a way to warm it up after dark.

So before you go hunting for a fault, ask whether the yellow appeared at a certain time of day, whether it is even across the panel, and whether it disappears on another device. Even, scheduled and only-on-this-machine all point at a setting rather than a broken screen.

A patchy yellow, a yellow band, or a yellow that stays after every setting has been reset is the panel itself.

Yellow Screen as a Light or Background

People also open a yellow screen on purpose. It works as a warm light, and it works as a plain background.

As a yellow screen light it is gentler at night than white, for the same reason night light exists: less blue, less glare, easier on your eyes in a dark room. Turn the brightness down and a tablet on this page lights a room softly.

As a yellow screen background it is flat and even, with no compression and no logo. That suits a screen share, a photo of a small object, or a simple backdrop behind something on a desk. A yellow screen video does the same job but adds ads, player controls and a warm laptop for no gain.

Photographers use warm light deliberately too, and a yellow screen next to a subject gives a cheap warm fill in a way a white screen cannot.
